Flying is obviously the best solution to get to Florence, but do not forget that Amerigo Vespucci Florence airport is not an intercontinental airport, so unless you leave from from one of the major European cities you will have to take a connection flight from from Milan or Rome (in some cases also Paris or London). From Florence airport it is easy to get into the city using public transportation or the “Fly by Bus” shuttle service (4.50 Euro one-way ticket). Since it is only five kilometres from the airport to the city (normally it takes 15 minutes), even a taxi ride will not break your budget (journey average cost: 17-22 Euro). Taxis are normally stationed in front of the arrivals terminal otherwise you can call +39 055 4390 or +39 055 4242.
If you land in Milan or Rome, you may also choose to do as the Italians do and take the high-speed Eurostar train (from Milan a 2 hours and a half journey, 33 Euro for a second class one-way ticket, from Rome 1 hour and a half, same price): you will be whizzed past the Tuscan countryside and into the heart of Renaissance Florence.
Another option can be Pisa Airport, which is cheaper, larger and it offers more facilities and more flights (for example a direct flight with New York). Just out of the airport you will find the railway station from where a train will whisk you to Florence in precisely an hour (the ticket costs 5.40 Euro), or you can also choose to take a more reliable and frequent bus shuttle (8 Euro for an adult ticket).
