It is undisputed that every year Italy is visited by millions of tourists. Florence, Rome, Venice, Milan and the Amalfi coast are probably the most popular and worldwide known places where foreign people choose to spend their holidays. However, there are cities, which remain off the most famous tourist track and which are really worth a visit. One of these is undoubtedly the beautiful Trieste. Known for its glorious past as the most important harbour of the Austrian Empire, but also for being the city of Joyce, Svevo and Rilke, this city will impress you for its unique multi-ethnic atmosphere (Italian, Slovene and to a lesser extent also German and Hungarian), for its lovely seashores, as well as for its narrow streets leading you up to the ancient cathedral of San Giusto, to the castle and to the Roman ruins. Getting to Trieste by train is easy: just have a look at the timetable here. As for accommodation we can suggest you the Porta Cavana Hotel, which has the advantages of being very central, comfortable and not very expensive. For a virtual tour of Trieste I hope you will enjoy this gallery of pictures I have taken about two weeks ago.
